You Have to Apply to Buy Ford’s New Supercar

If you’re interested in buying Ford’s new supercar, you have to apply for it first. Ford Motor Company recently announced that anyone who wants to buy the new GT will have to apply via their website and get vetted first.

Through FordGT.com, aspiring GT buyers will download a questionnaire filled with dozens of questions. The questions will test the applicants’ knowledge and passion for the brand.

Henry Ford III, the great-great-grandson of Henry Ford, is overseeing the GT program. His goal for the unusual system is to find drivers who will be true ambassadors to Ford. This means, at the least, drivers who have owned previous Ford GTs or even Ford collectors.

Out of all the applicants, Ford will only pick 500; for the next two years, they will only make 500 GT supercars. Before you apply, though, you might want to know the cost of the cars: prices start at $450,000. This makes the new GT the most expensive Ford production car of all time.

Henry Ford III’s sales process for this car is bizarre. The usual process is to supply the cars to independently-owned franchise dealers, who then decide which customers will receive the cars.

And that’s not all that’s different. The lucky 500 buyers will receive the bespoke “Ford GT Concierge Service”, which will help with the purchase of the supercar through a dealer of the buyer’s choice.

Even if you can’t afford the GT, you can still apply for it. You will be able to pick your options and customize your fantasy GT.

The GT’s engine will be an EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 which should be able to churn out over 600hp. Its body will be constructed from aluminum and carbon fiber.

You’ll see it in action in June. The track version will run at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This will be the 50th anniversary of Ford’s historic win at Le Mans: the original GT40 racecars finished first, second and third.
