If you have listened to Kendrick Lamar’s album then you probably heard the song DNA and you probably were waiting on the video like we were. If you have been waiting on the video, we promise this was worth the wait.
In the first scene of the video, he introduces Don Cheadle who goes head to head with him on different sides of an issue we know so well but saying the same thing.
Don Cheadle appears to be in the position of power while Kendrick is hooked up to a lie detector test and before he is even allowed to say anything the lies start getting written. It is perfect symbolism to what happens to the black man who is judged before he is even allowed to explain himself.
Don seems to represent what we call ‘coons’ in popular culture and Kendrick hits the nail on the head because at the end of the day whether you judge a man on the street and call him a thug or if you wear a tie, if you are black you have the same DNA.
He also makes the point that people always accuses Hip Hop culture as being the downfall of the black man because of all the talk of guns, drugs and violence. At the same time Hip Hop has saved so many artists like him from the game!
When Cheadle was asked about his role in the video he admitted he did not have much time to prepare because he was contacted by Lamar only a few days before filming. He also said that he said yes before even knowing he would be rapping a big portion of the song.
“I was like, ‘Uh OK, you know you’re like the best rapper in the world, so what are you talking about.’ He sent me the lyrics and was like, ‘You just have to get this much of it down,”’which was like half of it [laughs]. I was like, ‘Are you gonna have a teleprompter?’ And he said, ‘No, it’s gonna be fine.’”
He did great because the video was DAMN good- no pun intended! Check it out:
